About Extravaganza 09

Origins

The relationship between NUSCAS, VAS and CDS started in 2007 with the participation of NUSCAS and VAS in Kaleidoscope! ’07, organized by CDS. Close working ties were established in 2008, with Kaleidoscope! being co-organized by both NUSCAS and CDS, and strongly supported by VAS. Sharing the same passion and vision for the arts community, not to mention the shared synergies to be gained, the organizations have decided to work closely together this year. Extravaganza is the brainchild of this collaboration.

About the Organizers

NUS Comics and Animation Society

The NUS Comics and Animation Society (NUSCAS) is an independent society in National University of Singapore. It was formerly an interest group, and before that a sub-committee under the University’s Cultural Activities and Community Services (CACS) club. The club aims to promote the appreciation of comics and animation both within the NUS student body and the general public. In addition, the club hopes that the activities and events organized will help stimulate creativity and growth in the local comic and animation scene. Events organised by the club include the annual bazaar, newsletter publishing and Graphite.

NTU Visual Arts Society

The NTU Visual Arts Society (VAS) is an established student-run society in Nanyang Technological University (NTU), having been in operation for almost two decades. The objective of the society is to promote greater appreciation of the visual arts in NTU as well as to help develop the artistic talent of its members. With its supporting sub clubs – AnimeWorks, Comics Ensemble and Designer’s Club, the VAS organizes a wide range of activities including workshops, screenings and art festivals on campus.

Collateral Damage Studios

The art circle, Collateral Damage Studios (CDS) was founded by animator/illustrator Eddie Ching in the early days of 2007. CDS’ strength as an art circle lies in diversity of artistic styles, and they encourage each other continuously to find his/her own style of expression instead of trying to homogenize with one another (except when working on joint projects of course). This unique trait is CDS’s signature style, and anyone who wants to find his/her voice in art is free to join them in their quest: to break the benchmark of local works and form a new generation of creative talents. Reflecting this goal, CDS products are designed and created to be quality of highest level, breathtaking in concept, thoroughly researched, lovingly and painstakingly created, made using materials of the highest quality available and sold at a respectable price to reflect our dedication to their works. Kaleidoscope is the brainchild of Collateral Damage Studios and they were responsible for planning, coordination and publicity for the first event held in Suntec City and the second event at Funan Digital Life Mall.

Objectives

Extravaganza aims to provide a platform for young and inspiring artists to showcase their artwork to the public and industry. This also allows the infusion of an element of vibrancy and creativity towards the arts scene in Singapore and allows talented artists that may otherwise be lacking from a platform to exhibit their considerable talents. Through such events, we hope to allow the general public to have a greater understanding of the eclectic artistic styles within Singapore that includes western comic and eastern manga art aesthetics.

Theme

The general theme for Extravaganza is “Gaming”, highlighting the close ties between gaming and illustration, not to mention the emerging but vibrant local gaming industry. As such, all aspects of the showcase have been structured to highlight aspects of gaming art, and also feature ideas and concepts closely associated with gaming.

Target audience

Extravaganza aims to target both local and regional artists. The event would not only focus on drawing interest of art students, but also professional illustrators to showcase their ability. This provides an opportunity for industry players who wish to scout for rising talents. Moreover, Extravaganza will attract comic and animation fans as these are areas of interest that is tied closely to the gaming illustration on scene.
