Competitions

The competition segment is a combination of two previous illustrious competitions, Graphite and Ink! The prize presentation and exhibition will be held at Anime Festival Asia 2009.

Theme

Gamescape

Ever wanted to create your own game? Draw character(s) and scene from game made up by yourself. There is no restriction in illustration style.

Categories

Concept Art

We challenge participants to show us the greatest game scene they can give us. Participants are to create original character(s) with an appropriate background. Creativity, skills and how well the elements of both character and background complement each other determine who will be the winner.

INK! Traditional black and white media OR Traditional colour media. Charcoal is NOT allowed
Graphite Computer generated graphics OR digitally enhanced graphics done in traditional media

Sequential Art

Sequential art is the arrangement of pictures or images and words in deliberate sequence to narrate a story or dramatize an idea. Comic and storyboard formats are accepted. Western comic or Eastern manga layout conventions are both accepted, but must be so indicated by participant. Participants are to create any form of sequential art of up to 8 pages relating to the theme.

Computer generated graphics OR digitally enhanced graphics done in traditional media. Submission must be in Comic Studio format.

Registration

Registration can be done online, but will only be deemed as complete upon receipt of the registration fee of $7. In addition, upon registration, each participant will be issued a privilege card, which will be valid from now until 28th February 2010. This privilege card entitles them to discounts at various shops. Payment can be made at The Card Geeks, Sunshine Plaza starting 28th August .

Submission

The deadline for submission is on 8 November 09. Participants under the INK! Section must physically submit the original copy of their artwork. As for the Graphite section, we will be accepting both physical and digital submissions. The venue for accepting physical submissions will be announced soon. More submission details will be announced closer to the submission deadline.

Return of Entries

At the end of the showcase, all entries will be returned to their respective participants during stipulated return dates. The details will be announced at a later date. It is the responsibility of the participants to collect their artworks, failing which their entries will be taken as donated and thereof shall be property of the Extravaganza organizers.

Judging

There will be a panel of judges spanning throughout the whole competition, experts in related fields.

An absolute point system will be applied. Each area of artwork: coloring, relevance to topic provided, drawing technique etc will be allocated a percentage of the final result and the judges will grade each area by giving points. The final grade will be calculated by adding up all the points awarded to each section. Prizes for winners will then be awarded accordingly.

Grading Criteria for Sequential Art

Story Plot 15%
Artwork 35%
Characterization & Design 35%
Theme Relevance (and write up) 15%
Total 100%

The judging process will take around two to three weeks, and the decision of the judges and the organizers is final.

Planned Awards

If the quality of the artwork is not up to standard, the Gold prize may not be awarded, and the judging committee might award up to 2 silver prizes instead. Similarly, depending on the quality of the artworks, up to a maximum of 3 honorary mentions may be awarded. More details on the planned awards will be announced on the site as and when the organizers secure them.
